An image to ASCII converter recreates a picture as a grid of text characters. Each cell’s brightness determines its character density. On our dark background, dense symbols describe highlights and sparse marks describe shadows; Invert reverses that mapping.
Choose a JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF file up to 25 MiB, or start with a built-in sample. Very large images can exceed the browser’s canvas limits; reduce their resolution before trying again.
Start with a well-lit subject and a simple background. Increase Detail for more columns, try Detailed for smoother shading, and raise Brightness if the face or subject looks too dark. Compare the original and ASCII previews as you adjust.
Use PNG for sharing, SVG for scalable artwork, HTML for a styled web page, or ANSI for color in compatible terminals. TXT and Copy text contain characters without colors. Display text in a monospace font with preserved spaces and line breaks to keep it aligned.
PNG 4× redraws the characters at four times the width and height for a sharper image. It is disabled when the result would exceed our canvas size limits. Lower Detail to enable it, or export SVG to scale the character artwork.

Yes. GIF and animated WebP uploads keep their frames, timing and loop count. Download GIF to keep the animation; other exports and Copy text use the first frame. Animations are limited to 300 frames and a total processing budget; use a smaller image or lower Detail if needed.
Keep the original image colors, switch to black and white, choose one custom color, or blend two colors in a vertical gradient. Use the color picker or enter six-digit HEX values. Color changes appear in the live preview and supported exports.
